サミュエル・モールスは1791年4月27日、米国マサチューセッツ州チャールズタウン市（現ボストン市）にて、イギリス移民の牧師で「アメリカ地理学の父」と称されるジェディディア・モールスの長男として誕生しました。イェール大学で宗教哲学や数学を学んだが絵画の才能を発揮し画家として生計を立てるようになりますが、欧州旅行からの帰途の船上でみた電磁石の実験が後のモールス電信機の発明につながります。
Samuel F. B. Morse was born on April 27, 1791 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, the first child of the pastor Jedidiah Morse, who was also a geographer. He studied philosophy of religion and mathematics at Yale University, but his talent for painting led him to earn a living as a painter. And the experiments with electromagnets he encountered coincidently on a returning ship from Europe led him to the invention of the Morse telegraph.
